The following is a report from Nicolas Urioste in Uruguay:

 Thursday, 19 March 1998
We have sixteen teams actively competing in the national championship, where 8 teams compete at A grade level and 8 teams in B grade. We have several newbies getting started and compete in what we call C grade where they have small section championships.

The sport is practised nationwide, where 10 teams come from the capital of Uruguay (Montevideo) and 6 teams from other cities. We've been practising the sport for over 9 years now and we have approximately 130 players registered in our national association. The president is Gustavo Zerbino and is a former member of the IPC.

We regularly receive visits from Australia and for the last 4 years, Charles Brook has been travelling down here to coach us. During 1997, he and his wife Stephanie spent 2 months with us and attended the final round of our National Championships, which was broadcast live through cable TV to all the country.

The sport here is sponsored by several companies like Pepsi Cola (my team), a local cellular phone company named Movicom (the National A grade Champions), a cigarette company from Phillip Morris, Hyundai, Citibank, Royal and Sun Alliance Insurance, etc.

During April, we will be receiving a player from New Mexico, USA, who was travelling in South America doing business and contacted me through the Internet. He'll be playing Polocrosse here during his vacation for a month.

During summer (in January), Uruguay holds an international championship in a city called Punta del Este, which is best well known summer resort in South America and hosts teams and players from Argentina, Chile and in the near future, Brazil.

If anyone has the opportunity to travel to South America, please do not hesitate to contact me and I'll try to arrange some great Polocrosse Carnivals here, so that we can enjoy this extraordinary game.
