2000 - 2002 Polocrosse News Print E-mail
Saturday, 23 November 2002

Early in August 2002 we ran our second High Goal Challenge which was kindly sponsored by Spec-Savers and we managed to raise R80 000 for the administration and development of polocrosse here in South Africa. The overall winners were Classic Challenge managed by Louis Swart. In conjunction with the High Goal we ran an under 21 mixed international against the UK under 21's. The UK side was managed by Dave King and coached by a South African Andrew Heynes who is living in the UK. I must say their ladies were outstanding and beat our under 21 ladies in two of the three tests. South Africa won all three games with the help of the mens section and came away winners overall.

At the end of August we had a junior and veterans combined test against Zimbabwe in South Africa. This was also very successful for South Africa, coming away winners overall. We would like to thank the Zimbabweans for coming to play in our country as we realise how difficult it is to leave your farms.

We are now preparing for the World Cup and look forward to making new friends.

South Africa versus Zimbabwe International August 2001

Just to let you know about the International against Zimbabwe in Pretoria from the 7th - 12th August 2001:
South Africa whitewashed Zim in every division from the Under 14 all the way up to the Mens division. The only division we lost was the Ladies A division, unfortunately. It was a great test and some very sad news was announced at the tests and that was that Henry Harris from Zimbabwe (possibly one of polocrosse's GREATS) has now retired from the sport. He will however still be involved as his wife Manu will carry on playing.

Henry we think you are a great sportsman and hope to see you back on the field again one day - it would be sad to lose a player of your calibre, talent and horsemanship. We wish you well in whatever you decide to do - play golf? The results were as follows:

Juniors:
Under 14 mixed: SA 2 - Zim 1
Under 16 mixed: SA 2 - Zim 1
Under 19 Girls: SA 3 - Zim 0
Under 19 men: SA 3 - Zim 0

Seniors:
Ladies B: SA 3 - Zim 0
Ladies A: SA 1 - Zim 2
Men B: SA 3 - Zim 0
Men A: SA 3 - Zim 0

An update from Jacquie Shaw, the Liaison/PR Officer for polocrosse in SA.

Our season starts early this year, with our first tournament being held the first weekend in March. It should be quite an exciting year as the Zimbabweans are touring our country end of July, beginning of August. They are sending a Mens A & B, Ladies A & B side along with an under 19 Men and Ladies, Under 16 Mixed and Under 14 Mixed teams. The teams arrive in South Africa on the 28/29 July 2001 and the tests begin on the 31st of July including the Juniors and will alternate Junior and Seniors each day, with the final test being the Seniors on the 5th of August 2001.
