As at 5pm on 24th December, there are 1264 infected premises in the red zone of Queensland. View the breakdown by shire.
The horse industry in partnership with the DPI&F, private veterinarians and others in the industries are winning the battle against EI. This has lead to the release of a new protocol for events in the Performance and Pleasure horse industries, which is now available from the DPI&F Events portal on the DPI&F EI website.
DPI&F equine influenza response staff would like to thank all horse owners and the public for their support and continued efforts to eradicate EI and wish everyone a Happy Festive Season as we continue towards an EI free 2008.
DPI&F open hours during festive season
The DPI&F Business Information Centre will be open during the Christmas break (with the exception of Public Holidays) - 9:00am to 5:00pm (instead of 8:00am to 8:00pm). Except for medical emergencies no permits will be issued on Christmas, Boxing and New Years Day.
Change the status of your property
Need to know how to change the status of your property? Since the start of the EI outbreak, horse properties have been classed by the DPI&F as 'infected', 'suspect', 'dangerous contact' or 'negative premises' (see definitions). Changing the status of your property will depend on whether animals that were infected with equine influenza virus have recovered and are now immune and equine influenza virus is no longer present on the property (this is called a resolved status) or if the virus was never there (negative status). Find out more about applying for a change of status.
Applications for events in performance and pleasure horse sector now available
Applications are now open for organisers of horse events in the performance and pleasure horse sectors of Queensland.
Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) Chief Inspector of Stock Dr Allison Crook said the event organisers are required to thoroughly read the detailed protocol for holding events as they related to the Green, Red and Amber Zones prior to submitting the preliminary application.
"The new event protocol for performance and pleasure horse sectors has strict requirements placed on the event organiser to ensure minimum standards are met for nomination, biosecurity plans, and contingency plans to handle a case of respiratory illness in one or more horses.
"Event organisers in the red zone also have the option to apply to hold a 'district' event," she said.
"This is a major step forward to helping those organisers that plan to hold an event in early 2008.
"They can determine their requirements to meet the protocols, and if event is approved by the DPI&F, they commence advertising for nominations," she said.
The protocols for holding an event in the Red, Green and Amber Zones as well as the Application Form for event in the performance and pleasure horse sectors are available from the DPI&F equine influenza Events website.
Any event organiser planning to hold an event in January or Feburary 2008, should read the Events Protocol and Biosecurity Planfirst and if needed, contact Mr Simon Goddard
