Naracoorte Tournament No.2 - 7th & 8th January 2004

Twenty one teams competed for bridle wear made by local leather craftsman, Wayne Field, of The Tackroom Saddleworld, Mount Gambier. Unlike the previous weekend, the weather was sunny and calm.

A Grade - 5 Teams B Grade - 9 Teams C Grade - 7 Teams

Winners: Trafalgar (28) (Buster Jolly, Glen Burns, Damien Burns, Michael Semmins, Cam Templeton & Paddy McMahon)
Runners Up: Ballarat (8) (Matty Bowman, Brian Davidge, Steve Owen, Lance Owen, Peter Bourke & Mark Bourke)
The final was an absolute runaway win for Trafalgar with Ballarat running out of horses and riders due to injuries over the weekend. Ballarat had been playing one rider short for most of the weekend. Lance Owen rode two horses each game after his brother, Steve, was injured on Saturday. Outstanding work from goal scorers, Buster Jolly & Glen Burns, ensured Trafalgar's win; especially during the second chukka when Glen Burns threw 7 goals to Ballarat's 1.

Runners Up: Casterton (12) (Peter Dowsley, Tony Astbury, Bruce Caulfield, Ed Carmichael, Sarah Plush & Jamie Dowsley)
The first five chukkas matched both teams goal for goal, thanks primarily to the strong defensive work of Wayne Field & Kym Marie Berkin. Eventually Naracoorte's Kym Daniel Berkin took major control of the lead during the last chukka where he threw 6 completely unanswered goals.
Best #1 Kym Daniel Berkin (Naracoorte)
Best #2 Jan Allen (Casterton)

The C Grade final was the most exciting of the three finals played on Sunday. Ballarat led for the first four chukkas, ahead by three goals at the start of the final two chukkas. However, Casterton stepped up the pace and in the final 12 minutes of the game, threw 8 goals to Ballarat's 1.

Adelaide's Tournament 2004

(Held at the Naracoorte grounds 3rd & 4th of April)

A Grade - 4 Teams B Grade - 3 Teams C Grade - 3 Teams

Winners: Naracoorte 13 (Matt Prior, Wayne Field, Lindsay Cadzow, Mark Burke, Drew Gurney, Diana Cameron)
Runners Up: SA Mixed 12 (Andrew Cameron, David Cross, Shane Kirsch, Lynda Field, Fiona Wittig & Sharon Tilbrook)
The A Grade competition saw four teams trial-running some combinations likely to play together at the Nationals at the end of the month. The final was fiercely contested; an exciting spectacle for those on the sidelines. The SA Mixed team held the lead until the last sixty seconds when Naracoorte's Drew Gurney took three consecutive snaps out of the line up to the goal area. The winning goal was thrown within the dying seconds of the game.
Best Section: Naracoorte's Drew Gurney, Diana Cameron & Wayne Field
Best A Grade Horse: Andrew Cameron's Drawlena

Winners: Casterton 12 (Gringo Caulfield, Erin Wimshurst, Rod Carmicheal, Joey Smith, Abbey Tait & Darren Carlin)
Runners Up: Naracoorte 6 (Kimberly Hood, Kym Berkin, Kym-Marie Berkin, Sarah Leahy, Leigh Williams & Blue Barnard)
Casterton's huge win in the B Grade came down to the final six minutes of the game. The first chukka saw Casterton 3 goals to Naracoorte's 1. The second chukka had goal throwers Sarah Leahy & Joey Smith going goal for goal to keep the gap the same heading into the third chukka which was completely goalless for both teams. In the final chukka hard defensive work from Darren Carlin kept Naracoorte's goals down to only 2 while Joey Smith took quick snaps out of the line up to score six goals, the eventual winning margin.
Best Section: Casterton's Joey Smith, Abbey Tait & Darren Carlin
Best B Grade Horse: Sarah Leahy's Nibbles

Winners: Naracoorte 14 (Jim Hood, Tammie Berkin, Sophie Scott, Ross Clark, Sue Austin & Justin Schultz)
Runners Up: Adelaide 5 (Paul Pritchard, James Pritchard, Kym Lovett, Maria Lucey, Vanessa Germein & Sally Williams)
Most were expecting the C Grade final to be a close affair since the two teams had lined up against each other twice throughout the weekend & Adelaide had narrowly lost one of those games by a single goal. However, Adelaide chose to line up differently in the final & this meant that the two most experienced players, Ross Clark & Vanessa Germein went head to head, leaving Jim Hood against new players Kim Lovett & James Pritchard, the latter making his Grand Final debut as a #3.
Best Section: Naracoorte's Jim Hood, Tammie Berkin & Sophie Scott
Best C Grade Horse: Jim Hood's Ollie
