JUNE 2007 NEWSLETTER

Issue No 02/07

ZONE NEWS

The SHPSA held a committee meeting at the Hall Polocrosse Carnival on Saturday 17th May 2007. The meeting was to discuss when the remainder carnivals, including the Zone Carnival, would be held. It was decided that the Zone Carnival would be put back to run after the completion of the club carnivals.

The Burradoo Carnival will now run on 23 & 24 June and the Zone Carnival will be on 7 & 8 July at the Bong Bong grounds. The Bungendore Club informed the zone that they would not be holding a carnival this season.

Zone Championships Grafton

Letty has asked that anyone who is wishing to nominate for the Zone Championships, to be held on 3-5 August in Grafton, submit their nomination form to her by COB 22 June 2007. I have included a copy of the form on the back page.

CARNIVAL DATES

17 & 18 June - Moss Vale @ Camden
23 & 24 June - Burradoo
7 & 8 July - Zone Carnival @ Bong Bong
3 - 5 August - Zone Championships Grafton

COACH OF THE YEAR 2006

Congratulations to the Southern Highlands Coaching Director Michael Woods who was named not only NSW Coach of The Year but also joint Australian Coach of The Year for 2006.

2007 WORLD CUP

The World Cup has come and gone once again. It doesn't seem like that long ago that the World's finest first took to the pitch at Morgan Park in Warwick. Four years later and once again the Australian side made it into the final, this time however they were up against a firing UK side.

Both teams showed how hard they had worked for their spots in the final with the Australian team proving just how strong they are beating the UK 36 goals to 13. Congratulations to Aaron Clarke who was named Best Male Player.

The final results are as follows:

  1. Australia
  2. United Kingdom
  3. South Africa
  4. New Zealand
  5. Zimbabwe
  6. Ireland
  7. USA
  8. Canada

Now we will have to wait another four years until the World Cup rolls around again in the year 2011. With a change in venue and continent I'm sure the UK will be looking to change the final results from this year, making full use of their home turf advantage.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA NATIONALS 2008

The next Nationals will be held at the Perth Polocrosse Club fields in Brigadoon, Perth, WA. The Championships will be held from 13-19 October 2008. You can visit the club's website.

2007 SHOW TEAM RESULTS

The Sydney Show hosted the sub-junior competition between the Red and Green teams. The players were posed with new challenges for this competition not only was their field an enclosed sand arena but there were no penalty lines - just witches hats indicating where the lines should be. This new surface ensured that the ball passed through many racquets before making its way through the goal posts.

The Green team took out the competition winning 3 of their 4 games with Farann Mathie aiding her side to victory and picking up prizes for Best No. 3, Best ASH and also Champion Horse & Rider.

Red Team Green Team
Matthew Stevenson Harrison Griffin
Emily Brodigan Brook Field
Lincoln Whiteley Farran Mathie
Linton Grumley Luke Saul
Ashley Whiting Grace McNiven
Kieran Hancock Dean Wilson

Muswellbrook Show Intermediate Competition

The Muswellbrook Show saw the New South Wales Intermediate Mixed side take on an in form Queensland team. Unfortunately the Maroons proved too strong for the Blues taking out the competition 3 games nil.

Callum Hughes took home the prize for Best NSW No. 3 and I hear that despite the warmer temps a great time was had by all.

Sydney Show Senior Competition

As well as the sub-junior competition the Royal Easter Show held the Senior Mixed Competition which had NSW Country, NSW City and a travelling interstate team from Victoria taking to the field.

The three teams battled it out but it was an all New South Wales final with the Country up against a hard to beat City side. The City only just got on top at the final buzzer taking out the win 15 goals to 11. Alison Mathie from the Country side was awarded Best Female No.1.
