ZONE MEETING

The SH held a zone meeting on Saturday 10th February 2007 at the Hall Polocrosse Grounds. The main topic of the meeting was to discuss the state of the grounds this season and whether carnivals would be able to run as planned due to current weather conditions.

Unfortunately both the Bungendore and Lake George Clubs have had to postpone their carnivals this year due to the drought.
The season will still commence with the Yass Polocrosse Carnival on 17th & 18th March at the Hall Polocrosse Grounds. The following carnival will now be Eurocoast on 6th & 7th April (Good Friday & Easter Saturday).

The zone also decided at the meeting that they would support the Australian World Cup side by purchasing $300 worth of raffle tickets. The tickets will be on sale right up until they are drawn on 29th April at the World Cup.

CANBERRA SHOW

This year the Royal Canberra Show Society proposed to the SH that they would run the Junior Polocrosse Exhibition match on the Sunday afternoon of the show at 6pm. It was agreed by the SH that this was unacceptable as each year polocrosse is getting pushed further back in the program at the Royal Canberra Show with far less spectators staying around to watch.

The SH zone therefore unanimously decided that Polocrosse would not be played at this year's show, a disappointment for not only the zone but also for all the juniors who had nominated to play. The zone would like to thank all of those juniors who nominated.

LEVEL 1 COACHING COURSE

NSWPA held a coaching course at the Yass Soldiers Club on the 13th & 14th January. The course was run by Bill Bleechmore and Noel Challis. There were 20 Participants in all from both the Southern Highlands & South West Slopes.

A big thank you to the Southern Highlands Coaching Director Michael Woods for organising the course. Yet again the number of coaches within our zone continues to grow.

Congratulations to all who attended and after a rigorous two days of study obtained their certificates. I'm sure they will enjoy putting their theories into practice.

JUNIOR COACHING WEEKEND

On the 28th & 29th October 2006 the Southern Highlands hosted a Junior & Sub-junior coaching weekend at the Reid's Farm in Moruya. Despite the chilly temperatures throughout the weekend everyone was still able to manage a quick dip in the ocean on Saturday afternoon.

COACHES: Brett Hart, Garry Hallam, Dinah Haynes, Alison Mathie, Jo Reid, Jamie Brooks and Michael Woods.

ASSISTANT COACH: Jodie Mathie.

32 Juniors and Sub juniors had a great weekend down the coast. All the players showed plenty of enthusiasm and respect for the coaches, instructors and helpers. I would especially like to thank all the players for their behaviour over the weekend and their respect shown to the adults who took them to the beach on the Saturday afternoon.

A big thank you again to the Reid family for making the venue available and for all the work they put in over the weekend. Thanks also to the members of the Eurocoast club for their tireless work before and during the event.

Well done to all the coaches involved.

Michael Woods
Zone Coaching Director

COACHING CLINIC & UMPIRES SCHOOL

The Southern Highlands hosted a Coaching Clinic and Umpires School on Saturday and Sunday 10th & 11th February 2007 at the Hall Polocrosse Grounds.

There were 20 participants for the Coaching Clinic and despite the warmer weather everyone looked to be having a great time. This was a great opportunity for players to refine their skills and learn some great playing tactics to aid them in their games.

There were 6 umpires and 2 observers for the umpires school. I'm glad to report that all who took the test passed with flying colours and we should see them donning the black & white on the fields shortly.

As the black clouds continue to form on the horizon I hope that at some stage we will all get the much needed rain. It would be a wonderful sight this year if were given the opportunity to play in mud and not the dust clad fields that we are becoming so accustomed to.
