The season is set and it's now time to start getting your horses fit and ensuring that you have all the right tack!

Notes on conditioning your horse from Rachel of Lazy J Ranch
"There are no hard and fast rules on getting horses fit as each and every horse has a different conformation, athletic ability and very importantly different reaction times to schooling exercises. A variety of exercise is important, whether schooling in circles, lunging or working out on roads and hills, but it is necessary to recognize when the horse has had enough and beginning to tire. Always warm up your horse in a loose trot for about 10 minutes and never go straight into canter."

Tack required for polocrosse: Apart from the usual - saddle, numna and bridle(!) you will need over reach boots for all feet, Bandages for all 4 legs, a sursingle and standing martingale. There are a few people who sell tack in Lusaka and these are Tors Worthington on 097 782167, Heather Asherwood on 096 436344 and Liz Wienand on 096 758749. Don't forget to get your own gear together too! They all sell jods, hats, boots etc as well as sticks and balls.

TOURNAMENTS IN 2006

April 22nd 23rd
Sponsors Tournament
Leopards Hill Polocrosse Club

The first tournament of the season is held at Leopards Hill Polocrosse club situated on Lazy J Ranch and Stables on the outskirts of Lusaka. The ranch consists of 2000 acres of Miombo forest and stables 70 horses - some on livery but most are owned by ranch owners and hired out for a variety of equestrian activities including polocrosse.
Players from all clubs will be mixed together and put into teams sponsored (and clothed!) by Zambian businesses. This is an informal, relaxed and fun tournament as all players get to know one another at the start of the season.
For more info call Rachel 097 867697

May 6th and 7th
Choma Tournament

Choma is 3 hours drive south of Lusaka on the road to Livingstone. Although Choma is a small town situated in the middle of many farms this is in fact where polocrosse was first experimented with in Zambia.
Although most prefer to camp (and party!) by the field there are other places to stay in Choma, so if you are not one for "roughing it" you had better book early for the following lodges: Kozo Lodge 03 320430 / 097 745583 / 095 619665
Gwembe Safari Lodge: 03 220169.
For more info on the tournament call Lilo on 097 770 345
May 27th and 28th
MTN Tournament
Lusaka South Country Club

Lusaka South Country Club is south of Lusaka and offers cricket and polocrosse and other activities. This tournament is sponsored by a cell phone company called MTN.

June 30th—July 1st and 2nd
Nationals/Interprovincials

This is the first ever in Zambia! The very best players country wide will be split into three provinces:
Northern Province
Chisamba, Copperbelt and Mkushi
Central Province
Leopards Hill, Lusaka South and the Zambian Police
Southern Province
Mazabuka, Choma and Livingstone.
We hope that all will be here as the Zambia Polocrosse Association will be holding the 2005 Award ceremony and dinner dance on the Saturday evening at the club.
Details call Anthony Barker 096 8611
July 22nd - 23rd
Livingstone Tournament

Livingstone lies on the Victoria Falls - one of the 7 wonders of the world - and wildlife roams freely around lodges on the Zambezi River.
It is a 5 hour drive south of Lusaka and two hours past Choma.

The Club house is on the private property of Doug Evans (whose son Murray was chosen to ride in Australia) and lies behind his riverside lodge, Chundukwa.
Our poor towny horses get pretty nervous when the elephants wander around their open stables at night!
For those not wishing to camp, Chundukwa has stilted chalets over the river. Call Doug on 03 324452 or Sun International

Zim - Zam - Choma

Let's get our cup back!!!
Zim - Zam 2004 played in Zambia and won by Zambia.
Zim - Zam 2005 played in Zim and won by Zim.

Again, if you do not wish to camp, call Kozo or Gwembi Safaris.
Players must note that they are required to attend practice in Choma the weekend before 19th - 20th August so you had better arrange your accomodation for this too!

Choma is going to be busy this year!
