Line-up

A relatively new horse sport in the area, polocrosse was first played in Calgary in the early 1990’s and has enjoyed slow but continuous growth since that time. A big step forward for the sport occurred in 2003, with the formation of a second club, Foothills Polocrosse Club. Being centred in the Okotoks and High River area it has attracted a number of horse people who live in the neighbourhood.

New players enjoy a blend of social activities and team competition in a fast paced ball game on horseback. The game differs from traditional polo in that it is played with 3 players per side instead of 4 as in polo and with only one horse per player. Alternating chukkas (periods) are played by a second section of each team, which allows the first section to rest in preparation for their next chukka. It also uses a smaller field and features shorter runs, with more 1 on 1 play and the kind of moves that one sees in cutting or reining competitions. Polocrosse has often been called, King of the One Horse Sports and is enjoyed by young and old alike.

Pam and Vera

Regular Sunday games are held during spring and fall seasons between Calgary and Foothills. However this tournament marks a high point in competition for the sport in this area and should become a popular annual favourite with players and fans alike.

Both local clubs offer free learn to play clinics and weekly practices as well as Sunday games.
